Each section is a condensed version of a posting on the subject, so please follow title links for more information on each section.
Before you start:

Arm yourself with a reusable water bottle, a couple grocery totes, a few cloth bags and reusable jars and bottles.

Get your 4Rs right. Refuse-Reduce-Reuse… Recycle only as a last resort.

KITCHEN

Welcome alternatives to disposables (paper towels, garbage liners, wax paper, aluminum sheets, disposable plates, cups, etc....): Swap paper towels for reusable rags, swap sandwich baggies for kitchen towels or stainless containers, drop garbage liners all together (wet waste is mostly compostable anyways).

Buy in bulk or at the counter (see Zero Waste Grocery Shopping), bring reusable bags (dry goods), jars (wet items such as meat, deli, fish, cheese, oil, peanut butter) and bottles (liquids: oil, soy sauce, shampoo, conditioner).

If you cannot find it in bulk, find a supplier (bring your jar to the ice cream shop, a pillow case to the bakery for your bread, or your bottles to the winery/brewery)... or make it ( mustard, salad dressing, hot sauce, jams, OJ, hummus, cookies, canned tomatoes).

Shop the farmer's market: they'll take the egg carton and the berries baskets back for reuse. Your veggies will also most likely be free of plastic and stickers.

Learn to love your tap water.

Use bulk castile soap as a dish/hand cleaner, baking soda as a scrubber (in a stainless Parmesan dispenser) with acompostable cleaning brush (a wooden one with natural hair). Choose dishwasher detergent in a cardboard box.

Turn your trash can into a big compost keeper. Use your tiny compost keeper as a trash can (on the market, the sizes for these seem to be reversed).

Reinvent your leftovers before they go bad. Go thru yourrecipe binder/box and only keep the recipes that can be achieved with zero waste in mind.

Invest in a pressure cooker (halves the cooking time).

YOU CAN ALSO... Reuse single-side printed paper for grocery shopping and errands list, use your lettuce cleaning water to water plants, open your oven after baking in the winter (cool your oven, warm your house)...

BATHROOM

Use 100% recycled and unbleached toilet paper individually wrapped in paper (if you have solar you could install an electrical washlet to your toilet sit).

Use a solution of baking soda/water/lavender essential oil in a spray bottle or an alum stone or straight baking soda (most effective) as antiperspirant.

For shaving, (re)use a safety razor and shaving soap (usually wrapped in paper) or Alep soap (found in middle-eastern stores).

Refill your bottles with bulk shampoo and conditioner. If your hair is short, you also have the “no-poo” option: rinse your hair, massage baking soda in, then rinse, with vinegar for shine. Or use a shampoo bar. Instead of hairspray, switch to lemon water in a spray bottle (see Recipes). To go longer between washes, substitute dry shampoo for cornstarch (in bulk).

For body/face soap, find a package-free solid soap or bulk liquid castile soap. To exfoliate, switch to bulk baking soda oroatmeal for the face and salt for the body. For a mask, switch to bulk clays (French, Kaolin, Bentonite, etc...), mixed with water or apple cider vinegar.

Switch from toothpaste to homemade tooth powder (seeRecipes), in a glass parmesan dispenser. And until we see a wooden compostable toothbrush on the US market, there are no right answers out there yet.

Reduce your cosmetics and consider homemade substitutessuch as cocoa powder as bronzer and homemade balm that works on eyes, lips, hair and nails (see Recipes) and in lieu of disposable feminine products, invest in menstrual cup andreusable liners.

All you need for your nails is a nail clipper, stainless steel file and the homemade balm for moisture and shine.

Forget about Q-tips, they are not good for you anyways. Do your research.

YOU CAN ALSO... compost hair and nail clippings, put a brick in your toilet tank, collect water in a bucket while your shower heats and water your plants with it, and use zero waste cleaning: microfiber cloths for mirrors, hydrogen peroxide for mold, baking soda as scrub, a mix of baking soda and vinegar as drain cleaner (see Cleaning and Recipes)...

LAUNDRY AND CLEANING

Welcome natural cleaning alternatives: bulk castile soap on floors and sinks, homemade all purpose cleaner (seeRecipes), baking soda for scrubbing jobs, and hydrogen peroxide for mildew.

Welcome alternative house cleaning tools: a metal sponge on stainless, a wooden brush for light scrubbing, an old toothbrush for hard to reach places and microfiber cloths for everything else (counters, floor, fridge, etc… for mirrors and windows, just add water… no window cleaner needed).

Sweep your floors with a boar bristle broom, wash with a wetmicrofiber mop and a few drops of castile soap.

Use worn-out clothing items made into rags on your un-washable messes (wax/auto grease/glue/caulk).

Buy bulk dishwasher detergent or in a dishwasher detergent in a recyclable cardboard box and use white vinegar as a rinsing aid.

Let houseplants absorb toxins and clean your air. Open a window instead of plugging in an air freshener.

Laundry washing once a week saves time and dryer energy costs, use eco-friendly laundry detergent, full loads, andcold water cycles as much as possible. Savon de Marseille, dishwasher detergent, lemon or hydrogen peroxide work great on stains.

Dry on a line when possible.

Iron fewer things and use a homemade starch in a stainless spray bottle (see Recipes).

YOU CAN ALSO... find a sustainable dry cleaner (one that offers a reusable garment bag and non-toxic cleaners), compost dryer lint and dust bunnies...

DINING AND ENTERTAINING

Remember to bring extra jars to the grocery store when shopping for company (including take-out).

Make finger foods for larger parties and consider serving tap water with lemon slices instead of fizzy water.

Use ceramic dishes, cloth dinner napkins and cloth cocktail napkins at all times.

Avoid the use of serving platters/dishes: When serving straight onto dinner plates, it simplifies, saves water from extra cleaning, and it allows for a plate presentation.

Find creative ways to decorate your table with few napkin folding tricks, discarded leaves/branches from the yard, or just seasonal fruit…

Reuse empty votive tins (and the wick base) to make new votive candles for company with bulk beeswax and lead-free wick.

Stop buying CD and DVD's – download music and videos online.

Bring a jar of a homemade consumable, or your favorite bulk item wrapped in Furoshiki as a hostess gift. Give the gift of anexperience as a birthday present.

Educate your friends about your zero waste efforts (so they don't bring waste into your home)

YOU CAN ALSO... bring your own container for leftovers when dining out, use rechargeable batteries for those remote controls, try living without TV for a while...

OFFICE

Refuse, and therefore help stop the madness of the free-pen / free-pencil give-aways.

Use refillable stainless pens and pencils, white board markers and highlighters and donate extra office material (paper, pencils) to your public school's art program.

Start your personal junk mail war, cancel your phonedirectories, and sign up for electronic bills and statements.

Reuse paper clips (available in bulk) instead of staples, or astaple-free stapler.

Use your library to read business magazines and books, sell your books or donate them to your library for other people to enjoy.

Use memory sticks and external drives instead of CD’s.

YOU CAN ALSO... use a power strip on your equipment, recycle your printer cartridges and cell phone, donate your unused computer to Goodwill, make paper with double-side printed paper, take unused packing material to your local shipping center...

CLOSET

MEDICATION

Keep only a minimal supply, so you can see what you have.

Ask your pharmacy to reuse your prescription jar. It's illegal for pharmacies to refill them in CA, but your state might allow it..

Choose tablets (pain reliever, for example) in a glass or at default a plastic jar (usually a recyclable #2), instead of the tablets individually wrapped in aluminum/plastic and a box.

Do not buy jumbo size medication jars, they expire way before you can finish them.

Choose metal tubes instead of plastic.

Invest in a Neti pot: Great to clear out your sinuses with just water and sea salt.

GARDENING

Use drought tolerant and native plants, replace your lawn with short native grasses.

Make room for compost, pee in your citrus and compost. Consider a worm compost for liquid fertilize.

While I plan on blogging about mylocal grocery stores and the bulk they carry, here is my general guide on Zero Waste grocery shopping:

- Only shop once a week: If you run all your errands on the same day and with a list (written on single-side printed paper or receipts), it saves on gas and impulse shopping. For maximum fuel efficiency, start with the furthest stop.

- Always have a few shopping baskets in your trunk: I like the straw French market baskets (I have lined them with an old sheet to make them stronger). One is filled with cloth and produce bags. I also have a rigid tote that I keep in a corner of the kitchen to store/carry milk and “wet items” jars to/from the grocery store.

- Use 2 sizes of cloth bags (10 of each should do) to transport grains and small items available in bulk (flour, sugar, beans, cereal, cookies, spices, etc…): You can buy these bags in the bulk section of your store (tucked in a dark corner…). Since I had a specific design idea in mind, I made mine from old sheets, with a fabric tie to eliminate metal ties, with their tare stamped on, and with a washable marker handy to note the item number directly on the fabric. I also use laundry mesh bags for produce (the cashier can read produce item numbers through it).

HOW: If your bags do not have a tare (weight of your empty bag) printed on them, they can be weighed at the customer service counter. In the bulk section, you then fill your bag and write its item number either on a tie (trash!) or directly on your bag (better, zero waste). At home, you'll pour your grains in see-through airtight containers. Don’t forget to put your cloth bags back in your shopping basket and car!

- Bring jars (French Le Parfait are my favorite) for wet items such as meat, fish, cheese, and deli from the counter or honey, peanut butter, pickles, etc from bulk: I like to use 1 liter jars for counter items (for my family of 2 adults and 2 kids, I use about 5 x 1liter jars a week: 2 meat, 1 fish, 1 cheese, 1 deli). Obviously life would be easier if we had succeeded in becoming vegetarians, and even easier if we were vegans (have not tried that yet).
HOW: For bulk items, get your jar weighed for its tare, fill it and write the item number on the available stickers. For counter items, simply ask the counter associate to fill your jar with your chosen, meat/fish/deli/cheese (the price sticker goes onto the jar and can be easily removed later). Some ask if your jar is clean, others ask why you’re doing this. After you've gone to the same store and talked to the same associates for consecutive weeks (same day of the week), they'll stop asking questions (see Difficult trip to WF) and you’ll get through shopping faster. Interesting fact: To this day, the Safeway cheese counter has never questioned my jars.

- Bring a large bread bag to the bakery for your bread order: I made a bag from the same old sheet.
HOW: I order my bread from Whole Foods Bakery as soon as I enter the store, I insist on no bread sleeve, and my baguettes bake while I shop. When I am done shopping, they slide the baguettes into my bag and give me one sleeve (for its barcode) to take to the store cashier with the rest of my groceries (make sure you refuse that sleeve! so they can reuse it and be reminded of the unnecessary packaging, see “what can my grocery store do to reduce packaging”). When I I get home, I binge on warm bread and freeze the rest… 15 baguettes every other week (incl. 2lbs of carbs on my belly)

- Refill liter or gallon size glass bottles with bulk castile soap, shampoo, conditioner, soy, vinegar, maple syrup...: I simply reuse empty 1 liter Whole Foods white vinegar bottles (I have not found white vinegar in bulk yet) for this purpose. I bought the gallon size at Rainbow grocery for olive and cooking oils.
HOW: These bottles also need to be weighed before you fill them with your chosen liquid and stick an item number on them. You won't be bringing these along to the store on a weekly basis. Bulk liquids are harder to find than counter products or grains, but once you find your supply, you’ll figure out your household monthly needs and the capacity of bottles needed. Again, the less you use on an everyday basis, the less you’ll need to refill, the smaller your footprint.

- Buy milk that comes in a glass jar: Depending on where you live you can either get it from a local dairy with delivery service or simply find your nearest Straus vendor. I get mine from Whole foods (your regular grocery store does not want to bother with the hassle of bottle redemption). With a recyclable cap and ring, the bottle can be returned to the store and then to the producer for reuse. I like to leave the cap on, it keeps the rinsing water in and reminds Straus to come up with a non-plastic cap.
HOW: If you buy Straus from your dairy aisle, you'll be charged a $1.50 deposit on your grocery bill. When you've drank all the yummy cream top milk, you rinse the bottle, take it back to your store (or any Straus vendor)'s customer service for a store credit slip.

- Bring your jar or cloth bag to a specialty store for a refill, such as ice-cream, candy, dog food: OK, this one is not easy, and will get you the most turn downs. But business in a jar is still business! And many are open to it

HOW: Choose a small business, Rite Aid will not refill your jar with ice cream (they are bound to too many corporate rules, but, hey, that's for the better: I doubt of its ice cream quality anyways). A small family-owned store will most likely accept. My local gelato joint has done so. For health license reasons, they have to sterilize my jar before filling it, which means that I have to drop it off and pick it up a few hours later. It does not come cheap and one cannot binge on ice cream (PMS) at this price, but the ingredients, seasonal flavors and palate excitement are worth every penny.

- Shop at the farmers market for (1) the egg stand who takes back its empty egg cartons, and (2) the sticker free produce!

- Refill your clean empty wine bottles with your everyday wine at a local winery bottling event: We like the reuse screw top wine bottles for this, no corks wasted. I’ll go into detail later about the 2 wineries I found locally, wine refilling is hard to find.
HOW: Research/contact wineries about refilling your bottles. The one winery that we like most, offers a bottling event 4 times a year. This is how they organize it: You are greeted at a table and fill a form, then move to the cashier counter and pay for the amount of bottles that you brought, then move to bottling: bottle line up, wine filling, corking or screwing, and labeling. We forego the latter, unlabeled wine is a more sustainable wine. It’s also a great way to start people talking about Zero Waste at a dinner party.

- Bring a refillable beer jug to your local brewery: some breweries carry them. We only get beer on occasions, when we’re scheduled to entertain beer drinkers, since it goes flat faster than bottled.
HOW: Look for a local brewery that will provide such service. Call around. If you get turned down, your inquiring will at least get them thinking about it. At my local brewery, I choose my beer from a long menu, the bartender fills the jug from the chosen beer tap and I pay for it, all at the counter.

One item at a time, you can "Zero Waste" your grocery shopping too.

Reuse paper clips (available in bulk) instead of staples, or astaple-free stapler.

GARDENING

Use drought tolerant and native plants, replace your lawn with short native grasses.

Make room for compost, pee in your citrus and compost. Consider a worm compost for liquid fertilize.

the start up costs vary from $10 (Avon) to around $500 with Pampered Chef... granted some of these companies you do have a bigger pay percentage, but which one is easier to sell. here are somethings to consider.

Your Market will be Predominantly Women, no doubt. average is between 29 and 65. Most are working with highs school and some college, so now ask your self do you know enough people to make a side living from the start up costs? I highly recommend this project if you work allot with women youth sport, church, school systems, hospitals and so on. if you work in this environment you could do well with a part-time income.

i personally opted for Avon, my reasoning, the cost to start up and the discount i would get for goods i would purchase for me or my family and friends.

while all of these companies do offer you a discount and great tools, you must consider can i afforded to join a group just for the discount for your self, because you will be your best customer, if you wont buy from them what makes you think you can convince others to?

but one of my favorite parts, is that you can offer direct delivery for free or no charge means Avon ships goods directly to them no delivery on my part, saves gas and time.

if your interested in becoming an Avon lady / person contact me YourAvon.com/KatSharpe
getting paid to post ads
What is Hits4Pay?
This is a site that I cam across a long time ago. At first, I was very weary of the site’s legitimacy, but since they changed their design, it looks a lot more professional and user friendly. Hits4Pay is a website that allows you to earn small increments of money by reading advertiser’s ads. These ads are sent to your email and you read them through Hits4Pay.com.
How’s the pay?
The fact that led me to sign up with them was the free $10 they give to you for just signing up. It looks like now they are offering $5. That money definitely comes in handy with a site like this because you aren’t going to make a lot of money with it. I think the pay range per email ad read varies since I know I have read some that are 0.04 cents and some that are 0.02 cents. In any case, the pay is low; however, you could have X amount of email ads sitting in your account and it can definitely add up.
Is it going to take me forever to cash out?
It really depends on the availability of email ads and also your diligence. I haven’t kept up with it for a while, but I am getting back into it. I definitely could have made payout if I paid more attention it, but when I signed up with Hits4Pay.com, I had many other things going on in my life. The cash threshold is $25 and payments are made via PayPal between the 15th and 25th of each month. If your account has less than $25, then that amount is rolled over onto the next month and will continue to do so until you reach $25.
You Can Increase Your Earnings With Referrals!
This information is directly from Hits4Pay.com FAQs regarding referrals:

You will earn up to $0.02 for each email that you personally read. During advertiser promotions direct earnings will be $0.01 per validated email.

You will earn $0.01 for each validated email that your direct referrals read.

You will earn $0.01 from each validated email that your direct referral’s referral reads.

And when you visit your account page to look at your referrals breakdowns, it will resemble a structure like this:
Hits4Pay’s compensation plan is a two level plan. That means…

Direct Earnings: You earn up to $0.02 for each email that you validate. During advertiser promotions direct earnings will be $0.01 per validated email.

First Level: You earn $0.01 for each email that your direct referrals validate.

Second Level: You earn $0.01 from each validated email that your direct referral’s referral reads.

There are guidelines to follow when promoting your referral link:

No Spamming Of Any Kind – Please do not use unsolicited email marketing to promote hits4pay. We take SPAM complaints very seriously. If you are not sure what SPAM is, please educate yourself by reading the current SPAM laws here.

No Multiple Accounts - Please do not create multiple accounts. We monitor all accounts carefully before approval. Only one account per household. Do not sign up from a Internet Cafe or local library.

No False Advertising – Misrepresenting a company and it’s program is illegal.Hits4Pay is NOT:
- an employment opportunity.
- a get-rich-quick scheme to make money.
What Hits4Pay is:
- a way to earn some extra cash by viewing email ads from our advertisers.

Do Not Charge A Fee For Hits4Pay Membership - Hits4pay is completely free for anyone to signup. Members are not allowed to charge a fee to introduce hits4pay.

So, this opportunity is not something where you can depend on it fully, but like many other cash reward sites, you can earn a little here and there. I really like opportunities like this because I am always making money in some way.
Individuals are looking for people to post ads for them on various sites. The most popular site is probably Craigslist, although there are other reputable ad listing sites out there. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out the whole ad posting scene. You simply post an ad and you’ve made an extra couple of bucks. There are things to look out for when inquiring about these types of positions:

Are you promoting spam? Recently, I started an online business relationship with a person who wanted me to post ads on Craigslist. It was a good deal, but the ads looked so weird. Most of them didn’t make any sense, the English was horrible and I kept thinking who the hell is going to click these? Just be careful when selecting which clients you want to post ads for. In all honesty, I really don’t care what the ad looks like or what it is for as long as I get paid. Now, if the ad was completely vulgar or went against my personal beliefs, then that is a different story.

Never use your personal email address! I learned a long time ago to never use my personal email address on Craigslist. Even if it was from ad posting or me personally wanting to sell something, you will or can be bombarded with spam and these types of emails can be harmful. Consider making a new email address specifically for the ad posting position with Yahoo or Gmail to protect yourself.

Follow your instinct. This one is simple. If your gut is telling you something is off about the person or the ad itself, then simply walk away from the opportunity. Even though ad posting isn’t going to make you rich, dealing with a difficult individual who won’t pay you is frustrating. If you’re getting bad vibes about anything at all, tell the person you are no longer interested and start looking for other ad posting positions.

How much can you make?
The pay that comes with ad posting is not a whole lot. I believe I am right to say that the typical pay range is between 0.10-$1.00. It really depends though on the client who is hiring you. If you are getting paid an extremely low wage, then it’s probably okay to assume that the client doesn’t have a whole lot of money to start out with. Take this into consideration about your future work with the person. If the ad posting requires a lot of time on your part, such as making the ad or inputting pictures, then ask for a higher wage. I am pretty happy with a $1.00 because for me, it doesn’t take that long to post an ad. I’ve gotten use to the Craigslist realm and know my way around it.
The clients I’ve dealt with usually pay with PayPal. I would highly advise to use this method of payment simply because your personal information is secure.
Some advice about Craigslist:
Since Craigslist is probably the most popular choice for posting ads, then you will need a telephone to validate your posts. All that is required is your phone number to authenticate who you are, so Craigslist doesn’t think you are some kind of bot posting the ads. From my experience, my phone hasn’t been bombed with spam calls. The only trouble I have is not being able to use my phone number more than once. Craigslist has this holding period for each phone number you use, so be sure to use it sparingly.
There are other easy positions like ad posting available for us work at home warriors! I currently post comments on a website and get paid 0.25 per comment. It’s not a whole lot of money, but it’s still money! These types of opportunities are out there and it does take some searching to find the legitimate ones.
Consider adding ad posting to your daily work at home regimen. It can be easy work and some easy money that can be made. Just be mindful and careful, as with all work at home opportunities!
Bamageniushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14983548924232783026noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1602754984793329488.post-15579005963324921632011-11-03T11:26:00.001-07:002011-11-03T11:26:34.754-07:00Working at Home: Realistic Goals & Outcomes
When I began to work from home, I was introduced to a rude awakening. I realized that in most positions, I would have to hold back my own taxes and that most clients do not pay you what you are worth (just in my experience). So, I found that setting income goals for myself was very challenging. My ideal income was roughly $1,000 a month. That money would barely cover my bills, but I knew that was what I needed to make to stay a float.
I have to be honest – still to this day I am sometimes confused when trying to make an income goal for myself and I’ve found that daily goals left me feeling pretty crummy at the end of the day. Starting this month, I am implanting a new goal structure for myself. I have set a monthly and weekly goal. Since I would like to make $1,000/month, I figured that I needed to bring in $250 each week. It’s a bit scary thinking of such a big number, when before I had a reasonable number to work with when I was setting daily goals; however, I really feel like this going to work for me.
Here are some strategies I am going to be doing in order to succeed my goal:

Utilizing Cozi.com – If you have never been to this site, it is amazing! It’s an online calendar service, but it offers so much more. Ideally, it is for those who run a busy home schedule with kids, sports and events. It allows you to easily insert things, upload photos, color adjust certain events and so much more. What I had done was printed off this month’s calendar (which I absolutely love how it printed! Most sites give you a plain looking calendar, but this one is lively!). At the end of each week, I wrote: /$250. Above the slash, I plan to input my actual income amount.

I’m not going to set myself up to fail any longer! I am such a procrastinator that it isn’t even funny. I have my good days where I can finish all I want to do and then my bad days …. Where I feel like a total failure. Well, I’m over that. I know what I need to do so that I don’t feel like a failure. I need to accomplish the work I have set out to do for each day and complete it. No ifs, ands or buts about it! I have a handy planner where I write down all the work I have that needs to be completed and in previous posts, I’ve talked about the use of a bulletin board. I haven’t been using mine as much as I should have because right now it’s acting as a barrier to my wires so my puppy doesn’t get back there. I’m going to pull it up and place it on my wall and write down my goals on that as well. I’m also in the mood for locating inspirational quotes to bring me out of the funk I have some days!

Properly managing my time & organzing! This is a big one for me. I can’t tell you how many times I will sit down at my desk ready to work yet find myself sitting here for hours doing mindless things. I am going to start using the timer on my phone to properly manage my time. I’m going to allow myself breaks and what have you, but from now on they are going to be timed.

I think my biggest problem is adjusting to this whole scene. Working at home is as tough as working outside the home and over the last few months, I have really felt that. I need to start acting as if I am actually working, regardless of the negative comments I receive about “not doing anything all day.”
So, who’s with me? Are you ready for a change this month? What do you want to make? I believe in the power of encouraging others, so please leave a comment explaining your goal or what you would like to change this month about your work at home routine. Together we can help each other and become stronger!
UPDATE 10/1/11 – I may need to increase my monthly goal. I recently found out that my boyfriend and I are getting kicked out of our house. We currently rent off his Uncle and for some reason, he failed to let us know he promised this house to his mother-in-law in about, oh 2 MONTHS! This is my 5th time moving in 4 years … I’m getting pretty tired of it. But, I won’t let it lessen my spirits and I shall work harder on my goals to succeed!
Bamageniushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14983548924232783026noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1602754984793329488.post-24331462098581052302011-11-02T08:33:00.001-07:002011-11-02T08:33:39.463-07:00Free Lance Writing Pros and Cons
Writing can be both difficult and rewarding. It is certainly a creative outlet, but there is also a technical aspect involved in any linguistic pursuit. So it takes a particular type of mind to really make a career out of writing. It can bring about feelings of euphoria (when you’re on a roll) or total depression (as the nefarious writer’s block strikes at random), but it is almost never boring. However, freelance writing, in particular, has its own special challenges and benefits. So before you leap at the chance to be your own boss (to an extent), examine some of the pros and cons associated with becoming a writer for hire.

Work from home. PRO: The major benefit of contract writing is that you can do it from the comfort of your cozy office. You can formulate a routine that works with your lifestyle and avoid the constant interruptions inherent in an office setting. Bonus: appropriate attire includes pajamas and you’ll avoid the morning commute! CON: You will literally have only your cat for companionship. Freelance writers can become very isolated if they don’t make an effort to get out of the house once in awhile. You also face constant distractions like pets that need attention, a house that could stand a little cleaning, and your evil arch-nemesis, daytime television.

Set your own schedule. PRO: If you want to go to lunch with friends, sneak in some time at the gym, or take in an afternoon movie, there is absolutely no reason you can’t schedule it in. The flexibility is what draws most people to at-home work. CON: You are solely responsible for how your time is allocated. That means you have to be diligent when it comes to setting work hours and sticking to them. If you thought you could earn a living by rising at the crack of noon and working for a couple of hours in the afternoon, you were dreaming. And there is no one to blame but yourself if you can’t pay the bills.

Variety. PRO: The great thing about freelance writing (as opposed to other types) is that you will enjoy a constantly changing palette of subject matter. This means that you will most likely be learning new things all the time and you can avoid the boredom of expounding upon the same topics all the time. CON: Freelance writing requires you to be a sort of pen-slinging jack of all trades since at any given time you might have to tackle a vast array of topics from computer technology to nursing degrees to eco-friendly home-building to shopping for wedding dresses. It all depends on the work that comes your way. For an individual who is not comfortable with research or has a hard time elucidating subjects on which they lack expert knowledge, this can be an extremely challenging and stressful aspect of the job.

Multiple clients. PRO: Since you are basically your own boss, you can take on as few or as many clients as you wish, and only accept repeat business from the ones you like, ensuring less stress and good working relationships. CON: One problem with taking on several clients is that you are bound to get some bad apples. You will have to deal with people who are demanding, irrational, and disrespectful, and you must remain professional throughout if you don’t want to risk a negative review.

Freedom. PRO: This is the absolute best reason to pursue a career in freelance writing. If you want to work 20 hours a week you are free to do so. Planning a vacation does not require anyone’s consent or the rearranging of a schedule. And once you are established, you can virtually pick and choose which jobs to take. In essence, you are in full control of your life and your time. CON: As much as this can be a blessing, it can also be a curse. Freedom, in many cases, equates to personal responsibility, so if you find yourself spending all day at the beach only to realize that you’ve missed a deadline, you may not have self-discipline required to make a living as a freelance writer.

The economy is sputtering, and companies say they will make nothing but
perfect-10 hires. Meanwhile, Baby Boomers are retiring by the millions -- and
everyone wants to be a millionaire, not a wage earner. Where does all this leave
employers and workers in their never-ending struggle to tip the balance in the
American labor market?

annual survey commissioned by staffing firm Manpower, these dynamics yield a
number of occupations for which openings are hard to fill. Among white-collar
jobs, the following positions make Manpower’s 10 Hardest Jobs to Fill list: sales
reps, nurses, technicians,
restaurant/hotel
workers, managers/executives,
doctors/other
clinical practitioners, engineers and
customer
service reps. And on the blue-collar side, skilled
tradespeople and drivers make the
top 10.

But labor-market power has shifted toward employers with the soft
economy. In the prerecession year of 2007, Manpower’s survey of 2,000 US firms
showed that 41 percent of employers reported difficulties filling positions;
however, the 2010 tally found only about a third of that percentage of companies
-- 14 percent -- reported recruitment was a struggle.

And many experts,
especially labor advocates, take issue with the Manpower study’s conclusion that
all these occupations are in shortage. “Our starting point at EPI is where most
economists would start: If you don’t have low unemployment and rising wages, you
don’t have a shortage,” says Ross Eisenbrey, vice president of the Economic
Policy Institute (EPI).

So if you work in one of these occupations -- or
want to -- what’s the real story? Let’s take a look at the survey results and
get some perspective on what the shortages really mean.

White-Collar Occupations Blow in the Winds of Economic Change

With fuel prices spiking and oil and natural gas exploration heating up,
demand for petroleum
engineers is rising. Offshoring notwithstanding, “engineering
is going to be around for awhile,” says Melanie Holmes, a vice president at
Manpower North America. “Oil companies have employees averaging in their late
40s.”

Eisenbrey says EPI data shows labor shortages in a number of
white-collar niches, from healthcare
workers to librarians, farm
managers, engineering
managers and environmental
scientists.

Some Blue-Collar Jobs Go Unfilled Even as Their
Numbers Drop
Even after decades of manufacturing decline,
employment of machinists is
expected to drop another 5 percent between 2008 and 2018, according to the BLS.

“We’re at the very beginning of that decline; we haven’t necessarily
gotten there yet,” says Holmes. “Even if machinists are declining, applicants
are in short supply. Kids are not getting excited about going to tech and
vocational schools.”

Labor advocates paint a different picture.
“Employers are still not willing to pay what’s required,” says Eisenbrey. “It’s
a shortage only at the rate that employers want to pay.”

The skilled
trades rank high among blue-collar jobs that are hard to fill, according to
the Manpower survey. Carpenters, welders, plumbers, electricians
and masons are in
demand, the survey says.

But Eisenbrey questions the validity of these
conclusions. “It doesn’t make sense that jobs for construction workers and
laborers are hard to fill,” he says. “Wages are declining in most of these
occupations." While the Associated General Contractors of America reports that
40,000 new construction jobs -- many due to stimulus projects
-- were added between February and April 2010, that's a far cry from the more
than 2 million construction jobs lost over the previous three years.

Even
in our digital age, stuff still needs to get from here to there, whether the
trip is across the warehouse floor or around the world. That’s why jobs for
laborers such as freight,
stock
and materials
handlers are projected to increase by almost 250,000 positions from 2004 to
2014, according to the BLS. Many of these jobs require few skills but pay $12 to
$15 an hour, about double the federal minimum wage, which rose to $7.25 per hour
on July 24, 2009.
Bamageniushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14983548924232783026noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1602754984793329488.post-39963861206159787202011-10-07T09:51:00.001-07:002011-10-07T09:51:41.918-07:00Unemployment Guides and INFO by state

The brainiacs are saying the recession is
over, citing a rise in corporate confidence and a spike in orders being
placed. But it's not yet the real healing that individuals and families
so desperately need on the job front.
For the foreseeable future,
the job market will continue to be tough. That leaves many people in
unexpected positions. Clark recently talked with a woman who was
unemployed for some time. After a few minutes, it emerged that she had
not applied for unemployment compensation because she was too proud.
Unemployment
compensation should not be a dirty word in your vocabulary; insurers
pay this insurance during good times so people can survive during lean
times. So know that it is legitimate for you to seek assistance in this
economy.
Helping People in Transition
By Phil Holland, Founder, www.myownbusiness.org

More working Americans than ever are victims, or about-to-be victims,
of downsizing; also known as "reduction in force", "made redundant" or
"your job just went overseas." Scary questions begin to arise: Where do I
go from here? How am I going to make my mortgage payment?
For a laid-off worker who doesn't have bright prospects of replacing
his or her job, there is a possibility not to be overlooked: why not go
into business for yourself? For those still in jobs but fearful of
losing them (the signs are usually evident) there is the possibility of
starting a moonlight business now, while still working. As Harvey McKay
has said, "Find something you love to do and you'll never have to work a
day in you life."
Here is a list of top ten do's and don'ts for people in transition, a 14-session on-line course conducted
as a public service to point out the basic do-s and don'ts for start-up
businesses.

THE TOP TEN DO'S

Begin saving money by living very modestly.

Begin a study on what business would be best for you.

Begin working part-time in the kind of business you would like to start.

Talk to your family about the prospects of starting a business together.

Learn basic accounting.

Learn computer and up-to-the-minute communications tools.

Learn how to operate a web based E-Commerce business including marketing.

Prepare a written business plan for your intended business.

Ask qualified people in your intended business to critique your business plan.

Begin a diet and exercise discipline to build up health and endurance capabilities.

THE TOP TEN DON'TS

If you're still working at a job, don't quit until your business is in place and running.

If you're still working at a job, don't go into direct competition with your employer.

Don't incur any new financial obligations above basic necessities.

Don't sign any legal business document without your lawyer's approval.

Don't depend on information from franchisers or brokers: do your own research.

Don't be in a hurry: wait for the fat pitch opportunity.

Don't depend on your banker to provide start-up capital.

Don't commit to a concept without proving it first on a small basis.

Don't commit to a business in which you must have the lowest cost to survive.

Don't pick a business that is too high a risk. Go for the 2 foot hurdle.

Ways to Actively Make Money:

Clip coupons from the newspaper for items that you already buy.

Check to see if any stores in your area offer double coupons.

If you have good enough credit to get one, use a rebate credit
card and pay it off every month. You must not spend more than you can
afford to pay off each month, or you will pay more in interest than you
get back.

If you have the money to pay, use 0% financing and keep your
money in an interest-bearing account. Be careful of minimum monthly
payments and pay the balance electronically or mail it early enough that
they can't "lose" the payment and find it just after the due date.

Get a second job.

Rent out a room in your home or get a roommate if you rent.

Sell some of your old stuff on ebay

Using the Internet to connect with people who have particular skills
sets has become extremely popular in a time of high unemployment.

I
recently told you about a service called Fiverr.com, where people share things they're
willing to do for $5. (be sure to check out their sister sites also for $20, $50, and $100) You might be able to hire someone to review
your resume, design a website, improve a PowerPoint presentation or
even write your Maid of Honor speech -- all for $5! The low price is
often a loss leader allowing a contractor to develop a client base for
their particular area of expertise.
I have also talked in the past
about eLance.com,
which you can use to find freelancing and consulting jobs, or to offer
your freelance services to others.

Now The San
Francisco Chronicle has written up several other sites that offer
similar options:

TaskRabbit.com allows you to hire someone in your local
area to run errands for you. For example, if you buy Ikea furniture,
you might hire a "rabbit" to assemble it for you. The service is only
available in select areas.

RedBeacon.com lets you get price quotes and book
appointments for local services, such as those provided by a plumber
or electrician. Again, RedBeacon.com may only be available in select
areas.

ok, yesterday we discussed the possability of doing things like recruiting people to buy hosting to make an income on the side that pays decent money. Today lets go over some resume filler jobs that don't pay the best but can very useful to your resume.

Did you know that subsituting at your area schools pays half way decent money? It also creates a referrence to give prespective employers. For example I live in north Alabama area, and sub part time. Meaning I work about 1 day a week in the school system for about $70 a day, keep in mind i have a bachelors degree. High school or GED pays about $54 a day. There are no benefits and it is a first come first serve basis but can be a great referrence.

Keep in mind that you will have to get a license in most states. Typically you will need a clear TB test (can be done for free at your local health department), a finger print background check (costs about $50), and of course a subsitute license you get through the state costs about $40.

This does take little time get all your paperwork in order so plan it taking about a month.

Our school district uses a automated program called AESOP so when a teacher enters a day they need a sub it appears on the subs personal computer or you get a phone call asking you want the assignment. again its first come first serve. some teachers also have preferred subs that get the call first so keep that in mind.

If your system does not have a system like AESOP then you want to get business cards to take to the schools in your area and let the teachers know you are available.
